What are conversions in Google Analytics?

You have set up your website, you’re tracking visitation statistics through Google Analytics, and you are performing monthly reports on how much traffic has either increased or decreased over the course of a couple of months. Perhaps you are tracking keywords and implementing SEO tactics into your website to both increase your rankings and generate more traffic or to generate more revenue for your business once a visitor has visited. For example, you’ve set up a call-to-action button to encourage your visitors to purchase a new product online.

Perfect! Google Analytics allows you to take it one step further by offering conversion tracking. According to a Google Analytics overview, a ”conversion is the completion of an activity on your site that is important to the success of your business”.

For Example:

  • A completed quote request form on your website
  • Someone clicking on a specific call-to-action button on your website
  • Someone completed a newsletter sign-up form on your website.

In order to track conversions in Google Analytics you must define your goals in Analytics. These conversions are an important metric for measuring the success of your websites business objectives. A conversion is granted, when a visitor of your website completes one whole goal  between the time they first visit your website to when they leave.

Here is a really basic breakdown on how Google Conversions and Goal Tracking work…

Setting up goals and conversions on your website is extremely helpful in giving insight into your target market (website visitors) browsing experience, train of thought and interests, as well as giving insight into your websites technical or design pros and cons.
